In church, growing up, people would say sometimes that they were being tested. And I thought being tested meant they were going through a hard time. I didn't think of it like a test at school, where you were asked questions and forced to make choices.

When I was growing up in my church's youth group, the other kids would talk about how "god spoke" to them.. I didn't get it - i never heard anything...
People talked about the testing (I understood it the way you understood it) and they talked of "god speaking" to them.
What I never understood was that if Jesus turned water into wine, why were they doling out thimble-fulls of grapejuice?
